Green Energy PDF Print E-mail

sunflower and panel.jpg Whilst it may seem fashionable for businesses to go green, there are real reasons that major corporations are focusing their attention on climate change issues. Is it not the aim of most corporations in the world to plan for the future and ensure their existence?

For oil companies, in particular, this is a pressing issue as the worlds oil reserves are depleting fast. Not only are they addressing the issue surrounding dirty carbon footprints but they really need to supply alternative energy sources or cease to exist.

As reported in Accountancy magazine, the official publication of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), once carbon becomes a real monetary cost to business, behaviour changes and executives, accountants, & CEO’s alike will need to manage and account for these costs.

The world’s largest accounting companies are discussing and raising issues surrounding financial reporting methods for recent new balance sheet items such as ‘carbon credits’. The climate change corporate revolution has already started. Many well-known consumer brands are now looking to differentiate their product from others by tapping into consumer guilt associated with climate change.

Even the UK Government got in on the act when in the Budget it announced the implementation of future ‘green taxes’ and measures set to restrict the use of plastic bags in supermarkets!! Analysis by the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at Manchester University suggests that for the UK to play its part over the coming decades, we need to reduce the carbon intensity of our economy by between 9% and 13% year-after-year.
